Before we begin with the process, the first step is to understand the basic eligibility and the subjects required in school.
Eligibility:
- Along with PCM, you should have scored minimum 50% in 10+2.
- You should be a minimum of 18 years in age
1-Choosing the Right Subjects:
The first step towards becoming a Pilot is choosing Science stream and taking Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as subjects in school. No matter which board you are from, Physics and Mathematics are required as basic eligibility. It should be noted that in case you do not have PCM subject combination in 10+2, you can clear Physics and Mathematics from National Institute of Open Schooling.
2-Clearing the entrance exams and Medical Test
The most important licence to fly planes on the National and International routes is the Commercial Pilot Licence. Although there are two more licence – Student Pilot Licence and Private Pilot Licence, you can straight away apply for CPL. SPL and PPL are not required for commercial flying. SPL is just like a learning licence, and PPL is for private flying only. Let’s understand the process of obtaining the Commercial Private Licence.
1-Clear the Medical Tests: Before we move ahead, it is utmost important to be physically fit. There are some standards of the medical test by Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Govt. of India (DGCA) for the medical tests.
2- Clear all the Exams: Once you are through with your medical tests, you can move ahead with your exams. Here is a twist, the number of exams will vary according to the country you will choose to fly later (India or abroad). Let’s understand the process.
For India: If you plan to fly from Indian Flying School, there are 5 exams in total: Technical, Radio Telephony, Regulations, Navigation and Meteorology.
From Abroad: Flying through abroad schools is comparatively easy. You are required to clear only 3 out of 5 exams. Although, in this case, you have to come back to India once you have completed the entire process.
Applying to the Flying School In India
Once you are through with your entrance exams and Medical Entrance test, you should apply at a flying school (Either in India or Abroad). It takes 3-5 years to complete the entire process. In the flying school, there will be training on the ground as well as flight training. To get the CPL, you should complete at least 250 hours of flying.

How much it cost to become a Pilot in India?
Becoming a pilot is an expensive deal. It takes approximately 35-40 lakh for the entire process. But if you look at the salary, they are quite lucrative. On average, a Pilot in India earns around 2-4 lakh per month. Initially, you will fly domestic flights and are paid according to the number of flying hours. With the experience, pilots are promoted to international flights.
Is B.Sc in Aviation Required to Become a Pilot in India?
Becoming a pilot in India is not only an expensive affair but does not provide you with any degree. All you get is a licence to practice, but you will not be a graduate. Hence, in order to have some education qualification, students generally apply for B.Sc aviation. This also safeguards students in case they are looking for a career shift. Many a time, professionals wish to pursue an MBA and graduation is mandatory for that. Hence, to become a Pilot in India, B.Sc is not required but highly suggested from the education point of view.
